Anjum was appointed by then-Prime Minister Imran Khan and has served in various strategic military roles throughout his career. His tenure as the head of ISI has been a defining period for the agency, particularly in terms of overseeing intelligence operations during a time of complex geopolitical challenges.

LCurrently serving as the Adjutant General at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, Lt. Gen. Asim Malik brings a wealth of experience and military expertise to his new role as the ISI chief. His career has spanned various key leadership positions within the Pakistan Army, making him well-equipped to handle the responsibilities of leading the nation’s premier intelligence agency.

Before his appointment as the ISI Director General, Lt. Gen. Malik had extensive experience in handling security and military operations in several critical regions of Pakistan. One of his notable assignments includes his service in the Balochistan infantry division, where he played a crucial role in overseeing military activities in one of the country’s most sensitive regions. As the new ISI chief, Lt. Gen. Malik will be responsible for overseeing both domestic and international intelligence, counterterrorism operations, and efforts to safeguard Pakistan’s national security interests.

Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum, who will be stepping down as the ISI chief, has had a distinguished career in the Pakistan Army. Commissioned into service in September 1988, Gen. Anjum rose through the ranks, holding multiple high-level positions throughout his military career. Prior to his appointment as the Director General of ISI, Gen. Anjum headed Corps V in Karachi, a crucial assignment where he managed one of Pakistan’s largest and most important military regions.

In addition, he served as the Commandant of Command and Staff College Quetta, an institution that plays a key role in training and preparing the next generation of military leaders in Pakistan.

Gen. Anjum’s leadership as the ISI chief was marked by a period of significant challenges, both domestically and internationally. The role of the ISI chief is one of immense responsibility, as the agency is at the forefront of Pakistan’s national security apparatus. Lt. Gen. Malik will be tasked with overseeing critical intelligence operations that encompass a wide range of areas, including counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and cyber operations.

Given Pakistan’s current geopolitical environment, Lt. Gen. Malik’s leadership will be crucial in navigating regional security issues. In addition, global shifts in alliances and the rise of new security challenges, such as cyber threats and terrorism, will demand innovative strategies and decisive action from the new ISI chief.

Lt. Gen. Malik will also be expected to continue the reforms and modernization initiatives within the ISI to improve the agency’s capabilities. His previous roles, especially in Waziristan and Balochistan, will provide valuable insights into handling insurgency-related issues and strengthening internal security mechanisms.

His extensive background in military leadership, coupled with his operational experience in some of Pakistan’s most volatile regions, makes him a highly qualified choice for the role.
