On International Street Children Day, the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) underscores the pressing need for unified action to address the daunting challenges confronting street children in Pakistan. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the harsh realities endured by millions of children compelled to live, work, and beg on the streets, deprived of their basic rights and susceptible to exploitation and abuse.

Asiya Arif Khan, Executive Director of SPARC, stated, “On International Street Children Day, we stand in solidarity with the countless street children in Pakistan who face unimaginable hardships daily. Despite estimates suggesting approximately 1.5 million street children in Pakistan, this data is outdated. These children encounter various challenges, including extreme poverty, lack of access to education and healthcare, and exploitation. Prioritizing their rights and well-being is crucial, and concrete steps must be taken to ensure they receive the protection and support they deserve. Neglecting this segment of society may lead to increased delinquency among juveniles and youth.” She stressed the importance of the federal and provincial governments conducting a survey to gather data on street children and develop strategies for their reintegration into mainstream society.

Asiya shared that, alongside advocacy, SPARC provides non-formal education and essential item distribution to these children.

Dr. Khalil Ahmad Dogar, Program Manager at SPARC, emphasized, “Despite the ratification of international conventions such as the UNCRC, street children in Pakistan continue to face systemic barriers that deprive them of their fundamental rights. To address this issue, we urge the government to implement comprehensive measures, including establishing safeguarding mechanisms, child protection services, and tailored rehabilitation programs. Collaboration with the private sector and civil society is essential to augment government efforts and provide holistic support to these vulnerable children.”
