CJP Qazi Faez Isa has directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to collaborate with President Alvi regarding the election date. The ECP, during the Supreme Court proceedings, confirmed that polls are scheduled for February 11, 2024.

The development unfolded amid hearings responding to pleas advocating for timely elections in Pakistan. Notably, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and other entities have raised concerns to the apex court about potential election delays.

In the court session, ECP’s lawyer Sajeel Swati affirmed that the general election is slated for February 11, 2024. This decision is contingent upon the completion of the delimitation process, expected to conclude by November 30.

During the proceedings, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa questioned the ECP counsel regarding President Arif Alvi’s involvement in determining the election date.

Justice Athar Minallah, part of the three-member bench, highlighted the Constitution’s provision empowering the president to set the election date.

As a result of these discussions, CJP Isa instructed the ECP to engage in consultations with the president on this matter.

Earlier, the president’s role came under scrutiny as the SC bench probed lawyers from the PTI and SCBA regarding potential violations of the Constitution.

At a certain juncture, the chief justice observed that President Arif Alvi may have violated the Constitution by not promptly appointing an election date.
