In a significant development, the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, has declared the government’s intent to pursue a ban on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), citing a series of allegations and legal disputes. Addressing the media on Monday, Tarar launched a scathing critique of PTI’s leadership and outlined the government’s strategy moving forward.
Tarar began by condemning what he described as PTI’s detrimental impact on national stability and governance. He accused the party of exploiting religious sentiments for political gain and fostering a culture of division. “Our wisdom was seen as weakness, and a culture of abuse was promoted,” Tarar emphasized, reflecting on PTI’s tactics and policies that he believes undermine Pakistan’s socio-political fabric.
Highlighting recent legal battles, Tarar announced the government’s decision to file a review petition against a Supreme Court verdict regarding reserved parliamentary seats. He underscored concerns from women and minority groups, suggesting that the review aims to safeguard their representation and challenge PTI’s influence.
Accusing PTI of financial impropriety, Tarar alleged that the party received funds from dubious sources, a claim supported by evidence, according to him. He criticized PTI’s efforts to contest legal rulings, particularly concerning foreign funding regulations, which he argued jeopardizes national interests. “You attacked the national interest on May 9,” Tarar asserted, referencing specific incidents involving PTI members.
Turning to security matters, Tarar accused PTI of facilitating the return of Taliban elements and compromising national security protocols. He highlighted incidents where key military installations, including the General Headquarters (GHQ), were targeted, questioning PTI’s role in these destabilizing actions.
In a decisive move, Tarar revealed the government’s plan to initiate legal proceedings aimed at banning PTI altogether. He announced imminent legal actions against PTI’s leadership, including Chairman Imran Khan, former President Arif Alvi, and former Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri.
