Houthis Threaten Israeli Ships Amid Rising Tensions

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have issued a warning that if Israel does not cease bombing Gaza, they will hijack every Israeli maritime vessel passing through the seas. This statement comes after the rebels seized an Israeli cargo ship in the Red Sea, carrying 25 crew members, on November 14th.

Houthi spokesperson Mohammad Abdul Salam stated that Israel only understands the “language of power.” Therefore, they hijacked the Israeli vessel, holding the 25 individuals hostage, and threatened to target Israeli naval ships if the bombings on Gaza continue.

Notably, the spokesperson did not disclose the ownership of the captured vessel, whether it belongs to the Israeli government or a private Israeli cargo company. Additionally, no information was provided regarding the nationality of the captured crew members.

The Japanese operator of the seized vessel, NYK, revealed that the crew members hail from the Philippines, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, and Mexico. During the hijacking, the ship was empty, carrying no cargo.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno condemned the hijacking, stating that negotiations are underway with the Houthi rebels to ensure the safe release of the crew. Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Iran’s governments are collaborating for the negotiations, emphasizing the need for the safety of the captured crew.

On the other hand, Israel claims that the hijacked maritime vessel is British-owned, operated by a Japanese operator. However, public shipping data indicates that the vessel is owned by the wealthiest trader in Israel.

It’s crucial to note that the October 7th Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have resulted in over 13,000 Palestinian casualties, with more than 25,000 injured. In response, Hamas attacks have led to over 1,400 Israeli casualties, surpassing the 1,400 count.
