In a candid conversation with journalists at Adiala Jail, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan asserted that the establishment holds sway over the government, with the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) effectively running the country. Khan emphasized the critical need for transparent elections as the cornerstone of saving Pakistan from its current state.

Khan pointedly questioned the governance dynamics, highlighting concerns about civilians being tried in military courts, a practice he deemed incompatible with democratic norms. He criticized the significant increase in national debt, which ballooned from Rs2.8 trillion in 2021 to Rs8 to Rs9 trillion within a span of four years, attributing this to what he perceives as the failure of the current administration.

“The current government has shattered Pakistan’s hopes; public trust is eroding rapidly,” Khan lamented, citing economic hardships faced by ordinary citizens, who now contend with soaring utility bills. He also raised questions about the judiciary’s handling of cases, including issues related to human rights and the controversial February 8 case, which he feels are not receiving due attention in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Regarding allegations from a former cabinet member, Khan downplayed their significance, promising to address them at a later time. He affirmed his plans to commence a hunger strike, pending certain decisions, as a form of protest against what he perceives as systemic injustices.

Earlier on July 4, Khan publicly expressed his lack of confidence in Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa and announced his intention to stage a hunger strike while in detention.
