Iranian President Dr. Ebrahim Raisi arrived in Pakistan on Monday for a notable 3 day official visit. This visit gains prominence against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East and Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to finalize the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project, which has been dominating headlines.

President Raisi, accompanied by his spouse and a distinguished delegation comprising the foreign minister, cabinet members, senior officials, and a business delegation, was warmly received by Federal Minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada. Notably, this marks the first visit by any head of state to Pakistan following the February 8 general elections.

The timing of the visit is particularly significant as it follows Tehran’s recent direct attack on Israel, drawing attention to regional dynamics. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, commended the country’s armed forces for their success in recent events, emphasizing Iran’s prowess on the international stage.
During his stay, President Raisi is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani, and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. Additionally, he will visit Lahore and Karachi to engage with provincial leadership.

The agenda of the visit encompasses a wide range of topics aimed at fortifying Pakistan-Iran relations and fostering cooperation across various sectors, including trade, connectivity, energy, agriculture, and people-to-people contacts. Discussions will also delve into regional and global developments, with a focus on joint efforts to combat terrorism, a common threat faced by both nations.

Pakistan and Iran share deep-rooted bilateral ties rooted in history, culture, and religion, making this visit a pivotal opportunity to further strengthen their relationship. Despite recent tensions stemming from cross-border incidents, both countries remain committed to preserving their longstanding bond.

This visit comes months after incidents where Iran launched attacks in Pakistan, prompting condemnation from Islamabad. However, both nations have reiterated their commitment to maintaining friendly relations, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic engagement in resolving differences.

In light of the foreign dignitary’s visit, Karachi Division declared a public holiday on Tuesday to minimize inconvenience to the general public and facilitate the visit’s proceedings. This gesture underscores the significance of President Raisi’s visit and Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring its success.
