Islamabad High Court Adjourns Nawaz Sharif’s Appeals Hearing in Avenfield and Al-Azizia Cases

Islamabad High Court (IHC) has adjourned the hearing on Tuesday concerning the appeals filed by PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif against his convictions in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references. The two-member division bench, led by IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and including Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, will resume the proceedings on November 27.

Accompanied by his brother Shehbaz Sharif and senior PML-N leaders, including Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, Ishaq Dar, Ayaz Sadiq, and others, Nawaz Sharif arrived at the high court for the hearing.

In 2018, Nawaz Sharif received sentences of 10 and seven years in prison in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references, respectively. The IHC declared him a proclaimed offender in these cases when he sought medical treatment in London with the court’s permission in November 2019.

Upon his return to Pakistan on October 23 after four years, Nawaz Sharif filed appeals with the IHC to revive his case, challenging the dismissal in June 2021 due to his extended stay in London. The appeals argued that the PML-N leader did not utilize the bail granted in all the cases during his stay in London.

Earlier this week, an Islamabad accountability court directed Nawaz Sharif to record his statement in the Toshakhana case, adding another dimension to the legal proceedings.
