Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif addressed the media, highlighting the significance of Operation Azm-e-Istehkam as a non-political, national security initiative aimed at eradicating terrorism and extremism across Pakistan. He underscored the critical need for collective support from all institutions to ensure the operation’s success. “Terrorism is a national crisis, and every institution should support Operation Azm-e-Istehkam,” he asserted. “If the operation is not supported, it will not be as effective as it should be.”

Khawaja Asif noted that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur attended the Apex Committee meeting where Operation Azm-e-Istehkam was approved. He emphasized that Gandapur did not raise any objections during the meeting, countering claims that the operation lacked regional support. “Ali Amin Gandapur was present at the Apex Committee meeting and did not raise any objections regarding the operation,” Asif stated.

Last week, the Apex Committee of the National Action Plan (NAP), chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, gave the green light to launch Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. This move, aimed at eliminating terrorism and extremism nationwide, received intense criticism from opposition parties. Critics argued that the government’s decision to initiate military action without consulting parliament was inappropriate. Furthermore, the KPK minister denied that the operation was discussed with him during the Apex meeting, adding to the controversy.

Operation Azm-e-Istehkam is designed to integrate and synergize multiple efforts to combat extremism and terrorism comprehensively and decisively. The operation’s strategy includes not only military action but also politico-diplomatic measures. In the politico-diplomatic domain, efforts will be intensified to curtail operational space for terrorists through regional cooperation. This comprehensive approach aims to address the root causes of extremism and terrorism, ensuring long-term stability and security in Pakistan.

The operation’s success hinges on national unity and regional cooperation. By working together, various institutions and regional partners can effectively combat the threats posed by terrorism and extremism. Khawaja Asif reiterated the importance of collective action, stating, “National and regional cooperation is essential for the success of Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. We must stand united against terrorism to ensure a secure and stable future for Pakistan.”

Despite the opposition’s criticism, the government remains committed to Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. Defence Minister Asif addressed concerns about the lack of parliamentary consultation, emphasizing that the operation is a national security effort that transcends political considerations. He called on all political parties to support the initiative, recognizing the urgency of addressing the terrorism crisis. “This is not about politics; it is about the security and future of our nation,” Asif declared.

The implementation of Operation Azm-e-Istehkam will involve coordinated efforts across various sectors, including military, intelligence, and diplomatic channels. The government plans to enhance regional cooperation to limit the operational capabilities of terrorist groups. By fostering strong partnerships with neighboring countries and international allies, Pakistan aims to create a unified front against terrorism.

To ensure the operation’s success, the government is also focusing on garnering public support and raising awareness about the objectives and importance of Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. Public engagement initiatives will be launched to educate citizens about the need for collective action against extremism and terrorism. By fostering a sense of national unity and shared responsibility, the government hopes to create a supportive environment for the operation.
