Nepal Joins Global Trend, Bans TikTok Over Hate Content Concerns

In the latest move reflecting a global trend, Nepal has decided to restrict access to TikTok, the immensely popular short-form video app of Chinese origin. The Nepalese government’s decision to ban TikTok stems from concerns over the platform’s alleged refusal to remove hate content, adversely affecting social harmony in the country.

TikTok, a widely used Chinese app boasting 1.5 billion users worldwide, might not experience a significant impact from the ban in Nepal, a country with a population of 30 million. Nevertheless, this move aligns with the growing efforts by countries worldwide to regulate and limit TikTok use.

The Nepalese government expressed dissatisfaction with TikTok, stating that the platform’s content has been triggering religious hate, inciting violence, and promoting sexual abuse, which has even resulted in clashes. The ban, effective immediately, reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining social harmony by curbing content deemed disruptive to family structures and relations.

TikTok, known for its entertaining videos, witnessed a substantial surge in popularity across Asia and other parts of the world during the Covid-19 pandemic. This ban in Nepal is indicative of the ongoing scrutiny and regulatory measures being imposed globally on TikTok to address concerns related to content moderation and societal impact.
