In a significant move within Pakistan’s political landscape, former PML-N leaders Miftah Ismail and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi officially launched a new political party named Awaam Pakistan. The launch event, held recently in Islamabad, marked the beginning of their efforts to reform what they described as an obsolete system that predominantly serves the elite.

The inception of Awaam Pakistan comes after months of speculation and hints from both leaders about the need for a fresh political entity to address the country’s enduring challenges. During their launch address, they emphasized that Awaam Pakistan is open to all who aspire for a fairer and more inclusive political platform.

Miftah Ismail, who previously held the position of finance minister twice under the PML-N government, used the platform to critique the current government, likening its policies to those of the East India Company. He highlighted the plight of the middle class, which he claimed is being unfairly burdened, particularly through recent tax hikes affecting salaried classes. Ismail also pointed out a disturbing statistic: over 100 million people have fallen below the poverty line, indicating a deepening economic crisis under the current administration.

Calling for economic opportunities to be accessible to all, Ismail urged ordinary citizens to engage in politics, arguing that the existing system stifles their progress. He asserted that the status quo, which failed to protect the people’s interests, must be replaced with a more responsive and equitable framework.

The launch ceremony also saw discussions on the role of government in providing essential services like health and education. Ismail criticized the latest budget, alleging that it reflects a mindset that perpetuates inequality and traps the masses in a cycle of deprivation. He emphasized that Awaam Pakistan would prioritize meritocracy within its organizational structure, contrasting sharply with what he described as the dual-faced nature of the current state system.

The emergence of Awaam Pakistan gained attention last month with the release of a promotional video featuring concerned citizens raising pertinent questions about national issues. Shared widely on social media platforms, the video underscored the party’s slogan, “Badlein ge nizam” (We will change the system).

Speaking passionately about the party’s vision, Ismail reiterated that Awaam Pakistan rejects hereditary politics and the notion of a political “messiah.” Instead, he invited all Pakistanis who share their vision of a more equitable and progressive Pakistan to join their cause.
