Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced an ambitious scheme to distribute electric motorcycles to high-achieving students in government schools. This initiative aims to promote the use of electric vehicles (EVs) in Pakistan while incentivizing students to excel academically.
The announcement came during a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, focusing on measures to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles across the country. Similar to the successful laptop distribution scheme, the new program will reward students who perform exceptionally well in government schools by providing them with electric motorcycles at no cost. The Prime Minister emphasized that this initiative aims not only to recognize academic excellence but also to encourage the younger generation to embrace sustainable and eco-friendly transportation options.
The electric motorcycles are expected to be distributed free of charge, following the model of the laptop scheme where no fees were collected from the students. This move signifies the government’s commitment to supporting education and environmental sustainability simultaneously. By introducing electric motorcycles, the government also aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner alternatives to conventional vehicles.
During the meeting, it was revealed that significant progress has been made in the production of electric vehicles at the local level. Since 2022, 49 licenses have been issued for the production of two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles. Out of these, 25 factories have already started manufacturing electric motorcycles and rickshaws, contributing to the growth of the EV industry in Pakistan.
Moreover, the meeting was informed that the first license for domestic production of four-wheel electric vehicles was issued in September this year. The first indigenously manufactured electric car is expected to hit the market by December. This development marks a significant step towards achieving the country’s goal of becoming self-reliant in EV production and reducing dependence on imported vehicles.
To support the growing number of electric vehicles, the government plans to set up recharging stations on a priority basis. The establishment of a robust recharging infrastructure is crucial for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. By ensuring easy access to charging facilities, the government aims to encourage more citizens to switch to electric transportation, thus reducing the nation’s carbon footprint and reliance on fossil fuels.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to develop a detailed plan for electric-powered public transportation in Islamabad. This initiative aims to transform the capital city’s public transport system by introducing eco-friendly electric buses and other electric vehicles. The plan will focus on creating an efficient and sustainable public transportation network that minimizes environmental impact while providing residents with a reliable and cost-effective alternative to conventional modes of transport.
In an effort to lead by example, the Prime Minister has instructed all federal ministries to exclusively purchase electric motorbikes for federal government departments in the future. This directive aligns with the government’s broader strategy to conserve national funds and reduce environmental pollution. By adopting electric motorbikes, federal departments can significantly cut down on fuel expenses and contribute to the nation’s efforts to mitigate climate change.
The announcement of the electric motorcycle scheme for students and the push for electric public transportation reflect the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable and eco-friendly initiatives.
