Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken decisive action by announcing the abolition of five key ministries and directing officials to accelerate the implementation of an austerity plan aimed at streamlining government operations.

The ministries to be abolished include Information Technology, Kashmir Affairs, Ministry of Safeguard, Ministry of Industries and Production, and Ministry of Health Services. PM Shahbaz has instructed the formation of a committee led by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Member of National Assembly Bilal Azhar Kiani to oversee the role of provincial ministries.

Meanwhile, the federal cabinet has formally approved the abolition of the Ministry of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives as part of the broader austerity measures. This move underscores the government’s commitment to efficiency and cost reduction.

In a bid to provide immediate relief to the public, PM Shahbaz has directed measures to reduce electricity bills and accelerate the installation of solar tube wells. The cabinet also approved the advertisement of medicines on television, radio, and print media to enhance public access to healthcare information.

During the cabinet meeting, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal highlighted the challenging economic conditions facing Pakistan. He underscored the country’s heavy reliance on borrowing, stating, “The entire country is being run on borrowing, including salaries, pensions, and subsidies.”

Iqbal emphasized the need for sustainable economic policies amid political instability that has hindered policy continuity over the years. “We must improve efficiency and prioritize exports-led growth to sustain Pakistan’s economic viability,” he added, stressing the urgency of fiscal responsibility.

Currently, Pakistan’s exports stand at $30 billion, while the country faces the daunting task of repaying $75 billion in debt over the next three years.

This series of reforms and austerity measures marks a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s governance as the government strives to rationalize ministries, enhance fiscal discipline, and stimulate economic growth.
