The Power Division categorically dismissed recent rumors circulating in certain press sections regarding the government’s purported intention to enforce a fixed tax on solar power generation. In a statement issued on Saturday, the Division asserted, “There is no truth to the claims regarding the imposition of a fixed tax.”

Furthermore, it was clarified that neither the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) nor the Power Division has forwarded any such proposal to the government for consideration.

The surge in the installation of solar panels, particularly by affluent individuals, has raised concerns. Currently, domestic, industrial consumers, and the government bear a subsidy burden of Rs 1.90 per unit, impacting approximately 25 to 30 million consumers. If this trend persists, the bills for low-income consumers could escalate by at least Rs 3.35 per unit, the statement added.

Highlighting the significance of the Net Metering Policy 2017 in promoting alternative energy sources, the statement underscored a noticeable uptick in solarization efforts since its inception.

Amidst ongoing reviews of the entire system, there’s a pressing need to announce revised rates. Proposals and amendments are under consideration to alleviate the burden on low-income consumers. The government remains committed to safeguarding investments made through 1.5 to 2 million net metering installations.
