The Senate’s Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman provided crucial updates on the status of internet and telecommunications in Pakistan. The meeting, chaired by Rana Mahmood-ul-Hassan, covered various topics, including the ongoing social media ban and the future of digital infrastructure in the country.

One of the primary topics discussed was the ban on the social media platform ‘X,’ formerly known as Twitter. Chairman Hafeezur Rehman confirmed that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is prepared to lift the ban when instructed by the government. This announcement addresses ongoing concerns regarding access to social media platforms and their role in public discourse.

The ban on ‘X’ has been in effect since February 17, 2024, with users requiring a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access the platform. Despite occasional instances of accessibility without a VPN, the restriction has sparked considerable debate about freedom of expression and digital access in Pakistan.

During his briefing, Rehman highlighted that 56 percent of Pakistan’s population currently has access to the internet. This statistic underscores the growing importance of digital connectivity in the country. The PTA is working towards expanding internet access and improving the overall digital infrastructure.

A significant development in this regard is the finalization of the satellite policy. This policy is expected to enhance satellite communication and internet services across Pakistan. Additionally, the anticipated 5G auction is set to take place in March or April of the following year. The introduction of 5G technology promises to revolutionize telecommunications by offering faster internet speeds and more reliable connections.

Rehman also reviewed the instances of mobile service suspensions that occurred throughout the past year. Mobile services were suspended on four separate occasions, including during Muharram, on May 9, and during the elections. These suspensions were implemented as part of security measures and to maintain public order during critical periods.

The impact of these service disruptions on daily life and business operations highlights the need for a balanced approach to security and digital accessibility. The PTA continues to work on strategies to mitigate the effects of such suspensions and improve service continuity.

Looking ahead, the PTA aims to address several key areas to foster a more robust digital environment. The expansion of internet access and the rollout of 5G technology are central to this vision. By enhancing connectivity and technological capabilities, the PTA seeks to support economic growth and innovation in Pakistan.

The PTA’s commitment to lifting the social media ban, in alignment with government directives, is also a crucial aspect of its broader strategy. As the digital landscape evolves, the PTA will play a pivotal role in shaping policies that balance security concerns with the need for open and accessible communication channels.
