Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has intensified its call for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to fulfill its constitutional and legal responsibilities and take immediate, practical measures. PTI demands an end to ongoing state coercive actions and revengeful steps against the party, its leaders, and workers, ensuring a level playing field for the upcoming elections.
PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan criticized the Chief Election Commissioner’s (CEC) letters to federal and provincial caretaker governments, deeming them inadequate in addressing the continued oppression against PTI. Despite assurances for a level playing field, Hasan argued that no relief has been observed, necessitating more substantial action.
Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Hasan urged the electoral watchdog to employ its constitutional and legal powers. He highlighted the prevailing lawlessness and disorder, asserting that the country is amidst its worst constitutional and legal crises. Mere correspondence, according to Hasan, is insufficient in the current circumstances, and concrete steps are imperative.
The PTI spokesperson pointed out that the party has faced restrictions on peaceful political activities nationwide, with prohibitions on statements from political leaders, including Imran Khan, and their press conferences. Hasan expressed concern over the enforced disappearances of PTI leaders and workers, alleging that the state’s efforts to sideline PTI from the electoral race are widely discussed.
Highlighting the incarceration of PTI leaders without apparent crimes and their continued detention, Hasan stressed the need for the Election Commission to move beyond verbal orders and letters. PTI insists on the exercise of constitutional and legal powers by the ECP to promptly ensure free, fair, and transparent elections across the country. The party’s plea underscores the critical role the ECP must play to maintain the integrity of the electoral process amidst the current challenges.
