Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman unveiled the provincial budget for the financial year 2024-25 during an assembly session, just a day after the federal government announced its budget. The provincial budget, amounting to a significant Rs5.3 trillion, is set to address various developmental and economic needs of Punjab. This budget marks a historic moment as it is declared the first tax-free budget by the current provincial government.

Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman began his budget speech by highlighting the various measures and initiatives undertaken by the incumbent provincial government. He proudly announced that this would be the first tax-free budget under the current administration, aiming to provide relief to the citizens and stimulate economic growth. This strategic move is expected to garner significant public support and drive the province towards a more robust economic future.

The budget speech emphasized the government’s commitment to development and welfare projects across the province. Shuja-ur-Rehman outlined plans for substantial investments in healthcare, education, infrastructure, and social welfare programs. These initiatives are designed to improve the quality of life for Punjab’s residents and ensure sustainable development.

In the healthcare sector, the budget allocates significant funds for the construction of new hospitals, the upgrading of existing healthcare facilities, and the provision of modern medical equipment. The aim is to enhance healthcare services and make them more accessible to the general population.

Education also received considerable attention in the budget. Funds have been earmarked for the construction of new schools, the improvement of existing educational institutions, and the introduction of advanced teaching methods and technologies. These measures are intended to provide high-quality education and foster a skilled and knowledgeable workforce for the future.

Infrastructure development is another critical area of focus in the 2024-25 budget. The provincial government plans to invest heavily in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, and public transportation systems. These projects are expected to facilitate better connectivity, reduce travel time, and boost economic activities within the province.

Shuja-ur-Rehman also highlighted various social welfare programs aimed at supporting the underprivileged and vulnerable segments of society. The budget includes provisions for financial assistance, vocational training programs, and initiatives to create employment opportunities. These programs are designed to uplift the marginalized communities and promote inclusive growth.

As the Finance Minister presented the budget, members of the opposition could be seen tearing the budget document in a dramatic display of protest. The opposition’s dissent indicates significant political contention and disagreement over the budget’s provisions and priorities. Despite the protest, Shuja-ur-Rehman continued his speech, emphasizing the government’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and the welfare of the people.

The Finance Minister elaborated on the government’s economic strategy, focusing on fiscal discipline, efficient resource allocation, and the promotion of private sector investment. The tax-free budget is a central element of this strategy, aimed at reducing the financial burden on citizens and businesses, thereby fostering a conducive environment for economic growth and development.

Shuja-ur-Rehman expressed confidence in the budget’s ability to drive economic progress and improve the standard of living for the people of Punjab. He stressed that the government’s initiatives are aligned with long-term goals of sustainable development and prosperity.
