Sarim Burney to jail for two days, rejecting the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) request for an extension of his physical remand. Burney, renowned for his humanitarian efforts through the Sarim Burney Welfare Trust International, found himself in legal jeopardy upon his return from a trip to the United States, landing at the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi on June 5.

During his appearance in court, the FIA lawyer dropped bombshell accusations, alleging that Burney had played a role in a disturbing case of child trafficking involving a baby named Haya. According to the FIA, the child’s mother, Afsheen, had purportedly sold her daughter to a woman named Madiha, who subsequently sold the infant to another individual, Bushra. In contrast, Burney had purportedly declared the child an orphan in family court proceedings, contesting the FIA’s claims.

The FIA lawyer further asserted Burney’s non-cooperation with the investigation, citing the alleged lack of correct responses to inquiries. Shockingly, the lawyer disclosed the existence of over twenty potential victims yet to be identified, painting a distressing picture of the scope of the alleged trafficking operation. The court, seeking clarity on financial transactions related to the adoption, learned that the adoptive party had purportedly paid $3,000, prompting further investigation into the monetary aspects of the case.

These grave accusations, Burney’s defense lawyer, Amir Nawaz Waraich, mounted a vigorous defense, contending that the child’s family had voluntarily relinquished custody and accusing the FIA of undue harassment and coercion. He assured the court of Burney’s willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation, pointing to evidence stored on his mobile phone, which he had been unable to access during his absence from the country.

Burney’s assertion of ignorance regarding the child’s real parents drew incredulity from the court, given his prominent role within the welfare trust. The judge’s pointed questioning underscored the gravity of the situation, demanding accountability from Burney as the institution’s leader. Consequently, the court instructed the FIA’s investigation officer to record Burney’s statement, signaling a pivotal moment in the legal proceedings.

Looking ahead, Burney’s bail petition is scheduled for consideration on June 10, marking a crucial juncture in a case that has captured public attention and raised troubling questions about the protection of vulnerable children in society.
