Uber Ceases Ride-Hailing App Operations in Pakistan, Careem Continues Service

Uber announced on Tuesday its decision to discontinue its ride-hailing app in Pakistan, redirecting users to its subsidiary brand, Careem, for continued service. Despite the cessation of Uber’s operations, Careem will continue to offer ride-hailing services across Pakistan, ensuring earning opportunities for drivers.

The decision comes after Uber’s acquisition of its rival Careem for $3.1 billion in 2019. At the time of the acquisition, both companies had committed to maintaining their respective regional services and independent brands. However, in October 2022, Uber ceased operations in several Pakistani cities, including Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Islamabad, opting to operate exclusively through Careem in these locations. Uber continued its operations solely through its app in Lahore.

In an email sent to users in Lahore, Uber announced the discontinuation of its app services in the city effective April 30. The email assured users that ride-hailing services would still be available through Careem, offering a seamless experience. Users were encouraged to sign up and request rides through the Careem app.

Additionally, users were informed that Careem may contact them to facilitate the transition process. To safeguard user privacy, an option was provided to opt out of sharing their details with Careem by filling out a form before May 3, 2024.

For users with remaining Uber Cash balance in their Uber Wallet, the company pledged to communicate the process for reclaiming their balance in due course. As a gesture of goodwill, users were offered a 50% discount on their next five rides with Careem.

Upon attempting to access the Uber app, users in Lahore were greeted with a message indicating that Uber was no longer available in the city. Instead, they were directed to utilize Careem for ride-hailing services, with the option to enjoy a 50% discount on five rides using the code LHR50.

The transition from Uber to Careem marks a significant shift in the ride-hailing landscape in Pakistan. While Uber discontinues its operations, Careem is poised to continue serving users across the country, ensuring convenience and accessibility for commuters and drivers alike.
